About - Thomas Burkl

I am a landscape photographer raised in Germany and living in the French Alps. I see photography as a mindfulness exercise. I look for hidden meanings, moods and signs in my surroundings. I love squinting into the rising sun, listening to the sound of birds chirping at dawn, experiencing the earthy smell after a downpour as well as feeling the wind's gentle caress on my skin.

I want to share these insights with you and hope to spark your curiosity. I hope that my photographs will inspire you to feel that thoughtful connection with nature. I strongly believe there is more to life than problems, hassle, and resignation. Of course, we all get stuck and held back by what I call the "framework of life", but I try to concentrate on the "other side", the beautiful, secret and deep wonders that make life worth living.

As you can tell, I'm an optimistic person. It's easy for me to get overly excited about a lot of things in life, especially about the outdoor experience. I'd like to show you that, with a little effort, we can find peace and happiness as well as discover a totally different world from living in the city, a world that's at times warm, cold, harsh or mellow and where true values still exist.

This quote from The Little Prince (Antoine de Saint-Exupéry) expresses best what my art is about: "The most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or touched, they are felt with the heart."

The reason I go through a lot of effort to create my work is that it makes me feel truly alive. Up in the mountains, no one is there to tell me what I should think or do. That's where I can be totally free, and I want you to know that you can feel like that too. In order for my work to be as authentic as possible, I always put experience before photography. If photography gets in the way of feeling that special moment, I will happily pass that shot.

At heart, I'm a nature lover, a daydreamer, and a wanderer. I'm also a lucky husband and a father of a gorgeous girl and a sweet little boy.

I was raised in the beautiful mountains of Southern Germany. Over the years, my love for the mountains became a real obsession, and I often took my Dad's camera along to capture memories of those happy times. I made friends with similar-minded people and became a mountain guide for the German Alpine Club at the age of 20.

As I grew up in a German/French international family, I’ve always travelled a lot. My summers were spent in Southern France running around the vineyards surrounding our old family house close to the quaint village of Saint-Romain en Viennois.

I'd love to connect with you and hear how being outdoors changed your life.
